Dada Rudreshvarananda

Acarya Rudreshvaranandaji was initiated in Vientiane, Laos in 1975 by Dada Savitanandaji, and became LFT very soon thereafter. He attended the WT training in the first batch in Sweden and graduated in the summer of 1976. In 30 years as whole time of Ananda Marga, Dadaji worked in Berlin Sector and New York Sector, but it was in Nairobi sector that he spent most of his years as an Acarya. Dadaji was the pioneer of Ananda Marga in many African countries, and visited more than 40 African countries, starting in Congo. From the mid eighties Dadaji concentrated on AMURT work, and started our long term efforts in Burkina Faso. In total he spent about 15 years in Burkina Faso concentrating his energies in the remote desert communities in Oudalan province, with his headquarters in Deou. In this area Dadaji made a profound impact on the communities, and was known and loved throughout dozens of villages. The programs that AMURT has undertaken with Dadaji's guidance include wells, cereal banks, literacy drives, reforestation, road construction, cooperatives, training of health promoters, and most recently safe motherhood programs and training of midwives. He also founded the Ananda Marga master unit in southern Burkina Faso in the village of Bisseri. Here the activities include literacy drive, dispensary and cereal banks and farming. Dadaji was a great personality in Ananda Marga. He has been a pioneer and example in pracar in remote areas, and also in working with poor and neglected on a grassroots level for true community development. He was a dynamic pracaraka who created a large number of Margiis, LFTs and WTs. His absence will be deeply felt. He can never be replaced.

You may read or add your own memories of Dadaji below in the comments.

Subject: The passing of Acharya Rudreshvaranandaji

    Namaskar

It is with heavy heart I bring you the sad news of the passing our dear Acarya Rudreshvarananda Avadhuta. We received the news late Sunday evening, and some of the details have just now been communicated to us.

On Saturday evening, the 27th, Dadaji Rudreshvarananda was flying in a small plane with one passenger returning from the North of Burkina Faso, to Ouagadougou. He had contacted the control tower at Ouagadougou airport requesting permission to land. However, his plane never arrived. The plane crashed about 80 km north of Ouagadougou near a town called Kongoussi. His body is now in the morgue in Ouagadougou.

We will be traveling to Ouagadougou a.s.a.p., and hope to arrive by tomorrow.

For information you can contact Dada Pramanandaji or myself at +233-21-666-746 in Accra, Ghana, and hopefully from late Tuesday in Ouagadougou jagrti, +226-5034-3455.

    Yours in His Mission,

    Daneshananda

Kiranamayii and I knew Dadajii well. We counted him as a part of our
    family.

He was a very passionate man, and one committed to acting out his
understanding of the Ideology through practice.

He was a worker - a doer. He often reminded my wife and me to simply
just DO something good, regardless of what might be going on within
    the organization.

We talked about visiting with him in France, and going to Africa to
see the many projects he was instrumental in starting.

I will miss his sincerity and his refined mind - the subtle twinkle
in his eye and his good heart. His commitment to service, though,
will inspire Kiranamayii and me to do more as he so often encouraged
    us to do.

We know he is in Baba's Light now. But - we miss him, and for now, a
part of our hearts feels not a little pain and emptiness.

Just recently I told one of his stories to young students. It is a story about his deep conviction of love and service to humanity above all other things.

When he was first posted to Africa as one of the first Whole Time Workers of Ananda Marga to go there he was told he could choose any country he wanted. He decided for a country on the West Coast, maybe Ivory Coast where they speak French, thinking that that would be easy for him to work since he was French speaking. It took him a while in those days to collect his air ticket fare from friends and supporters to go there.. Finally he managed. But when he arrived at the airport he was questioned and not received well at all, rather he was sent back right away for whatever reasons. He was very annoyed about this as internally he was very clear that what came there was to do genuine service.
Again he had to collect for his ticket. After he had a certain amount of money he went to the airlines office and told that he wanted a ticket to Africa. They asked him for which country. At this point he was totally surrendered and said it does not matter, any one. They issued him a ticket for Congo. It was fine with him. This time everything went alright on his arrival in Congo. And then as soon as he came out of the airport he threw away his passport! He was in Africa. And that was where he would stay and work. He could not be bothered about passport and visa regulations. He was ready to do REAL work. His spirit was wonderful. We would not hear from him much as in those days communication was not as fast as today. But when we heard something it was amazing. He was able to do geat projects for the benefit of many. He loved and respected the people there and he accomplished so much.

From our human heart we can say his going is premature and sad. May he be with Baba.

This news has been a great shock. On behalf of the AMURT Canada Board I would like to express gratitude for all that Dada Rudreshvarananda has done to help establish AMURT in Canada. The initial conversations with Dadaji were very empowering and helped get us started. I think most of us have had some contact with him.

On a personal note I remember meeting him in December 1999 for the first time in a restaurant in Delhi, he wasn't in uniform but one of our group recognized Dadaji so we joined him. Together we went to Dharma Cakra that evening and afterwards (of course) we found a great little place to eat. The next time I saw him was about a week later in Ananda Nagar, we were both breaking our fast so we went to eat (do you see the pattern?). I didn't know this man but he resonated with me for some reason, he was like a gentle giant that you would find in a children's book. I met him a few times after that and each time it was like seeing an old friend. The last time I saw him he started a weight watchers program and was doing very well. This was the same year that he was returning to Burkina Faso and when speaking to him about it it seemed as if he was going back home. It is hard to imagine that I won't see his wide smile or feel his warm embrace again.

    Respectfully and warm heartedly,
    Ravi

Icame to konow him, can´t remember where even, may be while I visited West- Africa during DMS about 1994 as we went to different countires and projects. But I remember he was like a brother since beginning so simple and straight.
Before when I was LFT in Finland I organised with one company a real well in big market square and people could pump water. I was collecting money for Burkina Faso wells about 3000 besides my holeday job.
Baba takes care of him and we have our nice memories.

    Namaskar!
I knew Rudreshvaranandaji since 1983 when I was SS Berlin and he was Regional Secretary of Paris Region. He had started a plastic bags business to establish a Regional Office in Paris. I used to visit him in Paris and it was a inspiring to see his dedication.Later, when he was posted in Africa, he merged his identity with Africa and particularly Burkina Faso. Baba accepted his project as a global project and he became the 'star' of the world. He enjoyed his work there. My last meeting was in Ananda Kanan retreat in USA and he took me around to show the AMURT Office that he built in the Master Unit.I hope that Office can be dedicated to him. He was so proud of his effort. Soon after, he was to return to Burikano Faso and he was excited again to go back to Africa. Little I knew that it would be the last time I would see him and be with him. His memory stays fresh in my mind. He was a wonderful soul!

Dada Rudreshvarananda ranked among a small number of the best people I have known. By my own experience, he had real love for humanity. Selfless love. I believe he died young just like many other great saints in Ananda Marga -- apparently because his work was done and it was time to move on to an even greater future. Everyone who had the opportunity to be close to him has been blessed.

22 years ago Dada Rudreshvarananda welcomed me to Africa in Nairobi/Kenya, when I first became a full-time volunteer for Ananda Marga. I remember that our Guru used to praise the work Dada did in Burkina Faso, even though we had more important projects going on at that time.

I met him again in the USA where we worked together for the tornado victims in Oklahoma. I was impressed how he could easily make sympathy with the very bureaucratic people of the red-cross and how methodical he was in the approach with the authorities.

In the volunteer camps I organized, he always trained us in first aid and disaster-relief and gave us many good skills which got applied by our volunteers in the recent tornado Katrina. We felt more empowered by knowing we could save somebody's life in an accident. We learnt a great deal from his experiences in Burkina Faso which he was refering to many times in his classes. In fact his project was the first if not the most successful community development project outside of India for AMURT from which many lessons were learned.

I wish he could have stayed longer to teach us more, but God needed him somewhere else...

    Dada Mokseshvarananda

    Namaskar!

I was really shocked to hear of the sudden demise of one of my most dearest brothers Dada Rudresh (by his nick name known to most of us). I first heard
it on 1 June 2006, in the morning when I came back to Ranchi from
Anandanagar. Dada Rudreshvarananda Jii was committed in his life to serve the suffering people of the world, particularly of Deou in Burkina Faso where he chose his field of action to serve the most neglected community and he inspired many to do so. I have known him since he became a monk of Ananda Marga. I have missed him, and his great loss has created a vacuum which can
not be filled in the field of
    selfless service.

Let this message of mine to be conveyed to his parents on the condolence day on 5 June 06, that Ac. Rudreshvarananda Avadhuta had rendered yeoman services to bleeding humanity in his entire life for which he will be remembered for ever. I pray to Lord to give him permanent peace on HIS lap. I also pray to
Lord to provide strength to his laokik parents for the great loss of their Laokik son.

    In HIM Alone,

    Ac. Ramananda Avadhuta

Rudreshvaranandaji was a strong man. Just as the sun rises to heat the world every morning, so Rudreshvaranandaji rose every morning determined to bring Baba's heart to those who needed it the most.

Rudreshvaranandaji was a spiritual man. Just as a candle spreads light in darkness, so did Rudreshvaranandaji delve deep in his soul to seek the light of spiritual truth.

Rudreshvaranandaji was a friendly man. Just as the breeze soothens the skin, so did Rudreshvaranandaji bring joy to many people in all walks of life whom he called his friends.

Rudreshvaranandaji made his mark. His was a life lived to the full, a meteor surrendering its existence in a blaze of light... light that lingers in the minds of all who observed.

    With love,

    Vishvarupananda

I was saddened by the untimely death of Dadaji. I really felt connected with him, particularly his philosophy of life, his practical methods, his strength and, most of all, his great devotion to the Ananda Marga Mission. He was a true comrade in this struggle for a better world, and, like so many, I feel a tremendous loss. We must not let his words of great wisdom go unremembered, nor his great work go uncompleted. He represented the best of Ananda Marga, and his sacrifices and his determination is what all should strive to achieve.

After reading the tributes on this site to Dadaji's inspiring work plus his own article about his African experiences, I feel humbled beyond measure by what this one devotee was able to accomplish in his short life.

My personal experience with Dada Rudreshvarananda was as a family friend. He stopped by our house in the Bay Area quite regularly after his work at the prison yoga/meditation program at Jamestown, before returning to Los Angeles. During those evenings, after meditation and around the family table, we heard his stories about Africa and his work in Los Angeles, and we talked about politics, Ananda Marga, French culture, the places we loved the most,... and about my and Vinay's hopes and dreams as parents and as a family. In other words, we talked about everything.

After Dada returned to Africa, we continued our conversations via email, and, even with all his new responsibilities, his sweet concern for and joy in our small family's trials and triumphs and his love for our son never diminished.

For me, it was this ability to share deeply personal bonds with individual Margiis while also maintaining an intense, one-pointed focus on serving humanity that moved me the most about Dada Rudreshvarananda. His humility and love combined with his great passion for Baba's mission were "gifts from the heart," to all of us.

I feel certain that Dada is with Baba now, and that thought comforts me. As Vinay said in an earlier post, we feel compelled, as best we can, to do more service ourselves and to endeavour to bring humility and love to our efforts. Dada is gone from this world, but sweet memories remain to inspire us.

Dada Rudreshvaranandajii passing away it has been a great loss, I will always feel it in my life. He was a wonderful person, I was proud to feel that I’m his friend; he used to come to my room in Ananda Kanan and take his seat, and I was feeling so happy. He always had a smile in his face and a serene and peaceful vibration. He has been a very dedicated worker for Ananda Marga and encouraged many, through his example, to follow a good way in life and do something concrete.
He was for me a unique person in showing the way to do deep spiritual practices, he will get up every day before 3 am and will devout several hours in his first meditation.
He will always be in my heart.
My deepest condolences to his family and near ones.

At the memorial service in Deou, the depth of the people’s feelings for Dada was overwhelming. Delegations came from every section of the community; the first to come was the representatives from the Mosque, with whom Dadaji had always shared a deep feeling of spiritual unity and loyalty. The Association of Cooperatives, The Women’s Cooperative, (which Dadaji had helped to start), The Traditional Chief and his entourage, the Local Government, all the civil servants, including army, customs, police, education, agriculture etc. sent their representatives to present their condolences and speak about their feelings for Dadaji. Even the Catholic Church, whose members in Deou can be counted on one hand, came to express their sympaties. The biggest contingent was from the health sector, represented by in-charges and staff from the Medical centers in Deou, Gandafabou and Boulekessi, and all the village health promoters and village midwives that AMURT has trained over the last four years. Two midwives from Fadar Fadar, up near the Mali border, arrived the following day, as they journeyed on foot for two days to give their respect to Dadaji. Small delegations of 2 and 3 from many villages came to represent their communities.

Dozens of neighborhood women joined together and came as a group. We heard so many stories, from old women, and mothers, about how Dadaji had helped them with medicines and saved the lives of their children, arranging medicines, and sometimes emergency treatment and evacuation to the provincial hospital. An older man, who with Dada’s help had been trained to construct wells, was deeply moved. He told the story of how he was losing his sight and Dada had sent funds from the US for his operation. He said “If love could save a person from death, Dadaji would live forever, because he had so much love.” He told how he had felt desperate upon hearing the news of Dadaji’s accident, unable to even speak to his family. Many parents told of how Dadaji had paid for 80 school poor children to advance to the next class last year. In this area with one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world, education is very precious.

Le Pays, the leading daily newspaper in Ouagadougou published Dada’s photo and short obituary. The headline was just perfect “The Monk that loved Burkina”.

  17. Experiences during the Shraddha Ceremony for Ac. Rudreshvarananda Avt. in France:

“Do more service”, these are the words I will always remember from the conversations I used to have with Dada Rudreshvaranandaji. Maybe this is the remembrance and the teaching that I will keep from him in my mind and heart.

This afternoon, here in Perpignan, Southern France we had a shraddha’ ceremony for him. A few of us from his spiritual family and from his worldly family attended. We were only 7 people in total.

The ceremony was simple. We sang kiirtan for a few moments and meditated. Then Didi Ananda Harimaya’ explained about the ceremony which was translated into French by Sister Jyotsna. I recited the mantra and others followed. Didi proceeded with the ceremony in French and we all followed. At the end I recited Baba’s blessings in Sanskrit and I felt it’s deep vibration as always. Then we requested all to say some words.

The cousin, the sister and the mother all said something as well as Didi, Jyotsna, and the mother of another French Dada.

In the end the mother expressed that she felt more comforted and I felt that all were more relaxed and felt better.

Yesterday was the ceremony at the Catholic Church and this morning at the cemetery in West Perpignan.
The church was packed full of relatives and friends of Dada. The priest greeted us immediately upon our arrival and told that he hoped not to betray Dada’s faith but Didi replied that the goal is the same for all of us.
The priest knew Dada when he was growing up and conducted the service with much reverence. All was in French and therefore I could only understand part of it. The letter from Dada Daneshananda was translated into French and read by one cousin. She added in the end that she had some disagreements before but that now she understands that there are different ways but the path is the same. The priest continued and gave his blessings. Then he invited those who were closer to Dada to come forward and sprinkle some water over the coffin as a last reverence. I thought that only a few people would do that but to my surprise almost all, if not all, of the present stood up and walked to the front of the church, one by one, to do it. It was a very moving moment as each one would take their turn while silence reigned through the church.

After the ceremony many people came to talk to me and Didi and specially two cousins and an uncle of Dada. His cousin had visited him in Burkina Faso and had many photos of the project. The uncle was very sad but at the same time he was happy that Dada had decided to live as he lived.

After that we went to the crematorium where the body was cremated and all gave a last good bye by depositing a rose on the coffin.

Dada’s photo in his orange uniform and turbant was displayed all the time and that made me feel accepted by all and also respected. I felt that everyone was trying to understand what it meant to be a Dada and gave me the utmost respect. It was very good that Didi was there as she could express herself in French and being an elder Didi could relate to the mother and other relatives.

Those were only two days but it was a deep experience for me. It specially helped me to feel closer to all other Dadas and Didis working for Him throughout this planet. Our life is important and the message we carry most important. Our life is also short and we should utilize it as well as we can. And besides all it reminded me of a story I heard that Baba once asked what Ananda Marga is. Many people gave many replies such as: “a way of life” , “a philosophy”, etc. He finally said that we are a family. This experience in Perpignan refreshed this feeling in my mind. In spite of all that we think that we are doing, maybe our biggest accomplishment will be to feel and act like a real ideal family. It is through example that we teach and therefore our example will teach humanity more than any lecture or big project.

    Best wishes.
    Ac. Rainjitananda Avt.

  20. My deepest commiseration to our beloved DISCIPLE of Lord ANANDAMURTI; whom i came to know through his Acarya Savitananda Avt, how our beloved brother came into the Marga and his mysterious and revolutionary way to accept the principles of AM life style and later became the First Avadhuta of the country France. Later when i was travelling with respected GS Dada Dhruvanandaji in June 2005 and came in contact with our beloved brother Acarya Rudreshvarananda Avt in Oslo (Norway Region), who was really exceptional and extraordinary Acarya always thinking about benevolent welfare of downtrodden society in true spirit of the term. I had the opportunity to be with him for at least 3 days and came to know how simple and modest Dada was to be and watched his every moments and got to know how he was ready to fulfil his commitments given to HIS Beloved BABA. He was really the Man of Principles to many who have worked and know him well. Let us all tolerate this nobility for losing our Beloved Acarya of BABA, which is a great loss for the downtrodden society to replace such Acarya of Beloved BABA who was carrying out such marvellous task in this Mission of creating a NEW WORLD and better world till his last moment of life. Dadajii's sudden passing has elicited a feeling of sadness and has brought me back into memory the last time I saw him in the body.

It was a "chance" meeting at a DC at Phaniindra's LA home sometime around the end of the milleneum. Dada, it seemed to me, was coming into the Sector and we had affectionately conversed briefly as brothers ought to, in as much we had spent some time together in Africa.
He had the same charming smile and "smiling" eyes with that benevolent demeanor usually found on seasoned workers.

What other traits that stand out in my all-round experience with Dada is his much-needed leadership, dedication and inspiration that became a driving force for the new workers in the field.

Dadajii is a shining example for us all and he will surely be missed.

I am Margi initiated by Rudreshvarananda. I was looking for Ananda Marga Center in Cote d'Ivoire and saw that I can provide comments about him. This is really very good. I could not resist from saying humble few words. Dada Rudresh, as we all call him was an eye openning for many of us in the area of spirituality, meditation, internal and external self-realization. When he passed away I was not in Burkina, but was lucky enough to have gone in country, and to the Jagriti to remember his legacy. Dada Rudresh legacy will be remembered for ever in Burkina Faso. He was a loving, with very good Viveka, and full of energy. May his soul rest in peace.

I knew Dada R for several years. I first met him at summer retreat '99 at Ananda Kanan. Then I met him in Delhi at global RDS at MG quarters a few months later. I was sitting in the DC hall (the one with the thin green carpet) and asking him some questions about meditation. He used some sharp words with me implying that I was lazy in my meditation. I had a great deal of respect for his openness in making the comment. He had the courage to say what he thought. Later, I talked to him several times more at Ananda Kanan. He was very down to earth and kind. I felt that he really cared about me. Still later, I was living in LA and I saw him a few times at the jagrti. I came to know that he was a hard core hippy back in the '70s. He was teaching French in Laos when he was initiated. As I had travelled a lot and was a kind of hippy, I could relate to him. I had great respect for his toughness. Dada was very, very sincere and cared very deeply about Baba's world. I came to know a couple years ago that Dada R had died. But I didn't know up until recently that he was killed in a plane crash. I always assumed that he died from disease or a heart attack since he was fat. I feel angry that such a simple thing as a single engine plane could take such a wonderful Acharya from us. Central should make a rule that Acharya can only fly on scheduled commercial flights--never on small plane. Small planes are dangerous and crash frequently. A simply mechanical failure has taken this wonderful Acharya from the world. I feel angry. Dada R was truly great. His passing is a great loss to Ananda Marga.
