A'ca'rya Vijaya'nanda Avadhu'ta

Acarya Vijayananda Avadhuta, a senior monk of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, a renowned educationist and theoretician, passed away on 11th July, 2002 at Woodland Nursing Home, Calcutta. He had been serving the mission as a monk since its inception. A close disciple of Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii, the founder-preceptor of Ananda Marga, Acarya Vijayanandajii had devoted himself to the work of editing and publishing numerous of books of Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii in different languages for a long period of 35 years. He himself authored a good number of books on the life and message of Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii as well as on various aspects of Ananda Marga philosophy. He had a long association with the education department of Ananda Marga and served as its central secretary with distinction. He played a pioneering role in spreading Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii's ideas on neo-humanistic education to different countries of the world. He toured extensively various countries of the west and lectured on education and Ananda Marga philosophy in numerous seminars and symposia. In his passing away the Samgha and the world have lost an erudite scholar, a renowned academician, an ardent spiritual aspirant and a universally venerated soul. His funeral will took place on 14th July, 2002. Numerous followers of Marga, friends and admirers were present at Tiljala ashram to pay their last respects to the departed soul.

The book A'ma'der Vijaya'nandada' (Our Da'da' Vijaya'nanda), available at the Tiljala bookstore, contains several of the tributes included here, and in addition tributes, poems or short messages, all in Bengali, from 43 persons.

.....

Many have already written regarding Da'da' Vijaya'nanda's unequalled grasp of Ba'ba''s life and times and philosophy. It was my daily job for most of the last twenty-one years to help convert that knowledge into written form.

Two months before Da'da''s death, I had given him a written questionnaire related to Ba'ba''s teachings on many spiritual practices. During the last six weeks of his life, he was here in Tiljala working, in spite of a heart problem that was by then known to him, to finish the last two volumes of the definitive Bengali Prabha'ta Sam'giita series. Occupied myself with many works, I let five weeks go by without speaking to him seriously about the questionnaire.

In hindsight it may be good that I did not add to the pressures on Da'da' at that time. But since I was unaware of the seriousness of his condition, I would have to admit that it was as much due to my own inefficiency as to any consideration for him that I did not push him.

Finally, just five days before his death, I asked him if we could meet and go over the questionnaire. He promised we would do so, but said he had to go out of town to attend a wedding, and that we could meet two days later. On that two days later he said that he had a meeting to attend. I tried again two days after that -- the day before his death. He said that he had another meeting that morning and would have to go for an angiography in the evening. Shortly thereafter I saw him again. He said that the meeting had been cancelled. But because he looked tired and did not invite me to go over the questionnaire, I did not ask him about it again.

When I went to look for him the next day, I learned that he was at the hospital. And a few hours after that I learned that that perennial source of answers and inspiration was far, far beyond this mortal world.

My consolation regarding those particular questions of mine is that what was lost for the preservation of one important part of Ba'ba's legacy was gained for the preservation of another important part. Da'da' was able to finish his work on the Prabha't Sam'giita series.

In history, the loss for human knowledge will no doubt be recorded as the biggest loss in Da'da''s untimely death. But what personally haunts me now is to think that I will never again see that glint of implacable and utterly selfless determination that appeared in his eyes whenever we started on any work.

The one word that first comes to mind when I think of Da'da' Vijaya'nanda is the word "idealist". In this world there are idealists and there are realists. Da'da' Vijaya'nanda did understand the realities of the world, but he had little patience with those realities if they could not be made to conform to a higher ideal. He always set the highest ideals for himself, for others, and for his organization. Much of our work relationship involved my asking him question after question and his replying, and I remember how in answering any important question, not only on spiritual topics -- it might be a question on Indian culture, or history or any topic -- he had a way of concentrating his gaze up for a moment before answering, as if he wanted to consider any topic from the highest possible perspective.

Da'da' had little interest in leading an ordinary life, and he expected that others would not want to lead an ordinary life either. So if he was sometimes very outspoken, it was only because of his idealistic and uncompromising nature.

He told me a number of times, speaking in a fatherly way, that I was a very simple person, and that others might try to take advantage of my simplicity. But if we think of simplicity in the sense of saralata', straightforwardness, really he was a foremost example of simplicity. There are times in life when one must speak tactfully and carefully, and Da'da' could speak tactfully and carefully when the situation required it, but he was never comfortable doing so -- he always preferred to speak straight from the heart.

I first met Da'da' in 1975 and knew him then as a kind presence helping me to adjust to the then Central Office on Panditia Road, my first time in India. I first started doing substantial Publications work with him in 1981, and he then became my supervisor, either de facto or official, for most of the years until his death. My slowness for any work is famous; and though I cannot say that in all those years he never got angry with me -- for that slowness and other limitations -- I can say that if I had had to supervise someone like myself, I would certainly have gotten much more angry than Da'da' ever did.

  1. Now I send through you my deep & heartfelt sorrow on the sudden departure of
Dada Vijayanandaji. I cannot think of Tiljala & A M without him. He was an
authority on all our literature &texts. The gap he leaves behind is
impossible to bridge. may his soul get much deserved rest in His blissful
    lap.

On hearing the news from Mumbai DS & DSL about the sad demise of Avt

Whenever I went to Calcutta during Baba's physical presence, I would
invariably make a visit to Dada Vijayanandaji's room as a top priority on my
list. I felt like his favored son. He was always so cordial and full of
interesting spiritual points helpful for sadhana. He was a true friend.

When Baba gave us Kapalik, I believe it was Vijayanandaji who selected our
new names and submitted them for approval. In any case, Baba asked us to get
the meaning of our names from Dadaji. During Dharma Samiks'a Dada
Vijayanandaji was always there to verify different aspects of the worker's
physio-psychic condition as directed by Baba. He did this to me one time and
I was grateful that during that particular vulnerable moment his report back
to Baba about me was not negative.

I remember one incident in which I had applied for Avadhuta Diiks'a in 1980
on my first visit to India. I was rejected because I was not even an acarya,
not yet having gone to Varanasi BTC which is a compulsory part of becoming a
certified acarya. In my distraught condition, I still remember Dadaji's
words of encouragement: " It is not a question of if you will become an
avadhu'ta, it is only a question of when". Sure enough the next year when I
returned to India without any expectation of getting Diiks'a my name was
approved and no sooner was I swathed in the flowing orange robes of full
san'ya's'--Dada's prediction ringing true in my ears.

Dada loved spiritual knowledge and we learned so many things from him about
spirituality whenever we went to his room to share satsaunga. In spite of
his heavy work load with Publications, he always set aside time to sit with
the Juniors and give them encouragement and satsaunga, which he too really
    enjoyed.

Baba has now taken Dada with Him on another planet for the ongoing work of
Mahasambhuti in this Universe. We will surely meet him again, in different
circumstances and situations as is the Wish of Baba.

We wish him Godspeed and success as he travels to another part of this
Universe to carry on his eternal Mission as His son and devotee.

It is very sad that Dada Vijayanandaji left us. In my view he was the Veda
Vya'sa of Ananda Marga -- a historic chronicler and a person selected by the
Supreme Master for all the dictations.

With due respect and love towards dada Vijayanandaji I am expressing my
feelings. Since my young age I was very much attracted towards the senior
acaryas of our mission and specially those who were very close to HIM
physically. When I became dada I started developing my relation to those
dadas who had influenced me in some way or other during my margii life.
    Among them was dada Vijayanandaji.

As far coming close to dada is concerned it was very difficult because he
was very much busy with publication and I could see him free only during
morning or evening walk with some dadas.

In 1993 I was posted to ananda nagar in gurukula. Every month I used to come
to Calcutta for reporting. With the intention to develop the relationship,
once I asked him if he needs my help in any work I would like to do it. This
is how it started and whenever I came to Calcutta I helped him in proof
reading or checking hindi translation. During this period he told me some of
his interesting experiences with beloved BABA, some of which I am sharing
with all of you. Hope you will like it.

First incident is when he was 1-2 months margii, a young boy of 22 - 23 yrs
    age.

He visited Jamalpur to see BABA. There were about 25 - 30 people sitting in
the hall. BABA entered the hall and started discussing some topic. Meanwhile
with the mind to check sincerity, BABA said, "those who are not regular in
meditation should stand up". 10 -15 margiis who were not regular stood up.
BABA said ," see, still there are some who are not regular but still sitting
down". Then BABA one by one pointed towards 5 - 6 persons and started
scolding them. Dada was comfortable as he was regular in meditation. When
BABA was pointing one by one he thought if BABA asks him to stand up then it
means that HE can not be the Omniscient Master. BABA scolded all who were
not regular but didn't touch dada Vijayanandaji.

Another incident ...... He was selected for PC with BABA. He was a graduate
and had gone thru many of the scriptures and biographies of great masters.
When he entered BABA's room he had a piece of paper with almost 15 - 20
tough questions on philosophy. He wanted to ask these questions to BABA and
test HIS knowledge. BABA almost talked for 1 hr on different topics but
during that time dada completely forgot to take out this paper. When he came
out then only he realized the mistake. He was repenting very much. After 2
-3 weeks he again got similar chance but same thing repeated. Again he was
feeling sorry as he could not check BABA's knowledge. It was 3rd time now
for him to enter BABA's room after several weeks. This time he was very much
careful about asking the questions. He almost spent 1 hr with BABA but
didn't remember about the question paper. At last BABA said , "my little
boy, its getting late so you can go now". He did sa's't'aunga prana'ma to
BABA and was coming out of the room. Immediately BABA called him again and
said , "you have a paper in your pocket. You wanted to ask me something". It
was a very shocking moment for dada as he never expected it. He immediately
replied, "BABA , I beg pardon. I am very sorry as with my small brain I
tried to measure your knowledge". After that he never dared to test BABA and
surrendered completely to the Omniscient Master. There are several incidents
like this which prove that whenever someone was in front of BABA , HE was
able to control each and every thought of the disciple and whatever HE
desired was coming out of the disciple's mouth, which is not possible for
    the great yogis even.

Here is something more which I came to know from dada and I feel it is good
for all of us to know. After BABA's unexpected departure I heard different
complains from different dadas. Among it was, how BABA left without
establishing Sadvipra samaj..........During that time I heard one dada
mentioning about Shabda Cayanica. The notes on shabda cayanica reached up to
letter 'g' and we have 26 volumes only. How BABA left it unfinished. Other
thing I could understand as BABA once said I have done 95% of work rest you
all have to do. While mentioning about Krsna, HE mentioned that as far
Mahabharata is concerned credit goes to Lord Krsna but this time credit will
be yours. There are so many similar comments. Years passed so fast but my
question regarding shabda cayanica was unanswered. It was only 2 -3 yrs back
, I had to bring 4 trainees to Calcutta from TC. As I was trainer I went to
dada Vijayanandaji to learn more about Sanskrit language. During that time
the question flashed in my mind. I immediately asked dada about it. Then he
mentioned that just after last discourse before departure BABA called him
and asked, "the speed with which I am giving the notes on shabda cayanika,
how long it will take to finish it and how many volumes will be there?" Dada
went to BABA after doing his calculation, it was just 2 -3 days before
departure and said, "BABA, the speed with which YOU are giving the notes, it
will take 11.5 yrs and there will be 150 volumes more". Then BABA replied,
"it is really a big job to do. In future the intellectual giants can do this
job". Dada thought, it may be that BABA wants to start with some other
topic. But it didn't take long time to know why BABA said this to him.

Dadajii once told me that he heard from Baba's own mouth that the approach
of a Sadguru is very precise and clear. He comes at a proper moment and
after finishing His work, He leaves at a exactly calculated date. Not one
hour earlier or one hour latter. So it baseless for us to complain by
saying, "Why Baba left so early?" This made me overcome from the shock which
I got from Baba's departure which I thought an untimely leaving.

Dada used to appreciate people with good intellectual and organizational
capability. He mentioned to me many times about Didi A'nanda Mitra' for he
hard working nature and also about Dada Vijaks'ara'nandajii for his
knowledge on PROUT. He always encouraged workers to learn more and more and
    also to do hard work.

  4. My deep love and respect to Dada Vijayanandaji. In the year 1966 when I was
not a margii but I used to go Ananda Marga School where Dada Vijayananda was
a Principal. In my laokik district town, I first attended one lecture on
Ananda Marga Meditation given by two Dadas in my night college where I
studied graduation. I got address of Ananda Marga School from them. I had
been visiting Ananda Marga School for many months and had many talk with
Dada Vijayananda. After having many insightful guidance from Dada I got
initiated and also met Baba at DMC in the same place. I got many doubts and
questions when I saw Baba just after my initiation. But I was fortunate that
Dada Vijayanandajii was there clarify many things related to my spiritual
life. I used to go him time to time and asked many questions. I was not
knowing that there was a system of to became a monk or Acarya or Dada. One
day when I got "damka' hawa" without any cause I went to his place and Dada
understood my mental situation. He verified whether I had any clash or
quarrel with anybody or not. Then he just called one margii and gave some
money to the margii and told to buy a train ticket for Varanasi. He only
told me "you go to Varanasi there is one Dada he will give the correct path
of your life. After two days of reaching Varanasi I realized that I was in
training center to become a Whole Timer or to take Sanyas'i life. I am
thankful to him for his kind guidance.

Dada Vijayanandaji was a great inspiration to me and to so many sisters and
brothers who came from outside of India. Dadaji was always ready to tell and
explain on the various aspects of Baba's life and philosophy. With any
question we had we could approach Dadaji and he was always happy to answer
our queries. We will terribly miss him. He was very meticulous in details
about the publications of Baba's discourses and knew Baba's thoughts in and
out. His kind, hospitable and saintly personality will always remain an
    inspiration to me.

Vijayananda dada's departure is so sudden and unexpected. I do not find any
appropriate word to express my deep sorrow. Our Beloved Baba Himself trained
him to be an authority of Ananda Marga literatures. His departure is a great
loss to our mission. May his soul be in Baba.

The loss of Vijayanandaji is irreparable and irreplaceable for the
organisation. He was an intellectual par excellence, a hard worker and an
exceptional taskmaster. It is in fitness of things that we do something in
his memory. I suggest that the main 'Chawk' intersecting four ways near DMC
PANDAL in Ananda Nagar may be named "VIJAYANANDA CHOWK" or "VIJAYANANDA
SQUARE". A donor may be sought to build a beautiful "Vijaystambha" at the
    mid-point.

It is a great loss, but nothing is lost. By synchronicity, it happened that
I was seduced by Baba's articles and books, of course only in English, the
language I can understand. In the course of pursuing knowledge from those
books and articles, I never put to much attention on Publisher's Note,
specially on difficult long Sanskrit names with so many apostrophes. But by
reasons I do not know, in the back of my mind I can still remember the
abbreviation A'VA on my glances at the end of those publication notes.

When I read for the first time of his departure, that abbreviation just pop
up to my consciousness and feel the association of that abbreviation to Dada
Vijayanandaji. So the vibrations are already there, as previously I know
nothing about him, but ..... then I can feel and appreciate his efforts
every time I read all those books. The publications and its effort are
still there, the vibrations are still there recording all his efforts, and I
can still enjoy pursuing Baba's ideas, nothing is lost.

I first met Vijayanandaji in 1980 when I came to India as a Margii. I was
interested in Ek Manava Samaj work and was directed to his office for
assistance. He was very helpful and came across as a gentleman, a sort of
    father figure.

I always saw him as a father figure. We worked hard together in Baba's Lake
Gardens house translating the Ananda Vacanamrtam series into English. Baba
was putting a lot of pressure on Vijayanandaji in those days, demanding that
he publish a newly translated book every week! Well, by some miracle we were
able to finish a book every 10 days. Vijayanandaji never complained about
the tough working conditions or the constant pressure. He was happy to be
doing Baba's work to his best capacity. I enjoyed those sessions because
invariably Vijayanandaji would talk about Baba and his philosophy, giving me
deeper insights into the teachings of my Guru. Vijayanandaji was always
    eager to share knowledge.

We bonded well together and had a mutual respect for each other. I felt very
comfortable in his presence. Vijayanandaji would never ask for anything
personally, even when I traveled overseas. He lived a simple life, caring
more about preserving Baba's words than his own comforts.

Some people are impossible to replace, and Vijayanandaji is one of them. He
lived an ideal life, dedicating himself totally to the glorious mission of
Anandamurti. His soul will surely rejoice as it reflects upon the life he
    has just lived.

May we learn from his example.

in you everything I missed in others. You were the embodiment of affection,

transient. Now I take the solemn pledge that as desired by you I shall

My most beloved Dada Vijayanandaji left us all in a haste. I was completely
at a loss. A heavy loss to the organisation. He truly represented the Ananda

inspiration to individuals and the organisation. I dedicate myself to follow his

It is unthinkable that our respected Dada Vijayanandaji is no more with us

It seems like only yesterday that we spoke together of so many things. Your
presence still fills our ashram. It is unthinkable that you are no more with
us to guide us and share your knowledge and wisdom with us. After the
departure of our most beloved Baba, you were the final authority for us on
every question or doubt about our spiritual lives. Your early departure is a

Vijayananda Avadhuta, our beloved dada, entered this Tiljala campus
unnoticed. But when he left for all time to come, he was followed by
thousands to his graveyard, and millions wept silently who could not attend
the funeral ceremony. Death only could separate him from his loving brothers
and sisters. The people of Orissa are indebted to him for his contribution
to the RAWA and RU movement in this state. There was no publication in the
Oriya language (AM literature). He took special interest in publishing a
number of books in Oriya. Personally I am indebted to him because whenever I
met him he appeared quite optimistic and spoke about BABA and His ideology. He was quite
sensitive and concerned about the personal problems of fellow workers and Margiis.

Dada Vijayananda has left us forever - a hard truth for all the
spiritualists and intellectuals of Ananda Marga. It was a moment of
unthinkable grief when the news struck. When I first touched his feet in
1985 in a small Jagrti in West Bengal I felt a surge of electricity through
my fingers, a feeling as vivid as yesterday! I was initiated soon after .
Whenever I went To India I always made a point to meet him in Calcutta. I
realized that his depth of knowledge and Ideological conviction is unmatched
and will be very hard to find in future. But he touched so many people's
heart that he will live forever.

Anyone may call me as selfish, but I tell you, "I have lost my moral
guardian". Any person could be your guardian but anyone cannot be your moral
guardian - one who guides you to the path of Ideology can be a real moral
guardian. We loved Baba, we respect Baba but at the same time we used to
fear Baba because he may scold me if I am on the wrong track. Similarly,
after Baba's physical departure I was sometime afraid of Vijayananda Dada
because whenever I met Dada I had a feeling that he may scold me or expose
me in front of people if I am on the wrong track. As you know, he was always
straight forward. Hypocrisy could never touch his character, which he
learned from Baba. He alway guided us to the path of Ideology and always
used to tell not to waste time in idle gossiping.

The day before he departed from this world I saw him doing corrections on
certain book. I told him, "why are you working so hard, when you are so
sick?". He replied, "How can a person remain without work. Baba worked till
His last breath." When he left Tiljala for medical check-up, I was sitting
on the rock near the round grill. He did namaskar, I also did
prati-namaskar. He told me, "I am leaving -- you should keep good health."
He continued keeping his folded hand then he did long namaskar facing Baba's
memorial and continued doing namaskar till he left the front gate as if he
is doing his last namaskar to Tiljala. I pray Baba for his eternal bliss.

today (11.07.2002) in Kalikata. I can't imagine how it could happen. I don't
understand what is Baba's Liila'. Since I heard it, I communicated this sad
news to some of the WTs and Margiis. Everyone expressed their sadness,
immediately. I don't have words to express my tributes to him who was always
noble and caring to all of us. He is a great soul - departed us and its a
great loss for the entire humanity as well as our mission. His realisation
to Baba and His Ideology was unparallel to any of us. Thats why he continued
to work to share and subscribe the volume of knowledge what he earned from
Lord Shrii shrii Anandamurtijii (Baba). There are so many of Baba's
Pravacans and valuable information he transcribed and translated into
Bengalii, Hindi and English which are available in Ananda Marga Publications
against illogical injustices in the mission as well as in the society. He
represented Baba in many countries throughout the Globe. I'll narrate a
comment just heard a from Suprakash - a margii brother in Berlin who used be
a newly initiated margii in 1987 and attended his first Ananda Marga
conference in Fulda, Germany. It was our Global Ananda Marga Conference and
Dada Vijayanandajii was addressing as Central Representative. Prior to
depart from Calcutta for Europe Dada Vijayanandajii went to Baba, had
Sastaunga Pronam (Salutation to Gurudeva) and asked Baba for His blessings
and Message (if any). In the beginning Baba mentioned "I have given you
everything, so there are nothing to be given more", but at the last moment
He called and said to him that "Wind is blowing in our favour - Let Dharma
be established". Dada Vijayanandajii carried that message and conducted the
conference nicely which was highly vibrated and remembered by the
    participants.

I would like to thank Dada Vijayananda for his greatness and endless
contribution to Ananda Marga literatures. Ananda Margiis from Sydney,
Australia, will always remember his work and sincere dedication to Baba's
mission and the upliftment of humanity. I personally felt that I have missed
the opportunity to meet this great dada physically and I heard many stories
of him from the margiis. But I am sure that all of us will meet again to do
His mission and merge ourselves eternally in His presence like in the past,
Krs'na of Vrn'davan. Param Pita Baba Ki, Jai!

    My deep Namaskar to Vijayanandajii,

Long time he has a sever headache at Ananda Nagar. So i went to see him, I
told why are you so much disturbed. I took second listen and massage him and
his headache gone. Because I had golden chance to massage Baba by his
grace.. Baba taught some technique that i used on him, his headache went.
Always he told everybody about my massage. I had deep love for him. Once day
I told Vijayanandajii, "you are a intellectual, we could not get time to
read BABA's books". Then he replied, "every devotee has different special
quality -- Baba gave me duties according to my inner desire". This time I
was busy at Ananda Nagar with security and LRC. I ask some workers about
him, where is he? then they told, he gone for treatment at Calcutta. So
after DMS, I came to Calcutta and i met him in his room, on 10th of June,
and i requested him, please recover your health first, then work. He told
how i can keep free from organisational work, again I requested please come
one peaceful place where i can arrange all facilities for your Everything
belongs to him. We should not be guided by sentiment, If anybody guided by
any sentiment, he or she is not Ananda Margii, What you talk about Tattvika,
Acarya and Avadhuta. Be alert because we are surrounded by Adharmik
(anti-social elements) and our Baba mission is functioning throughout the
cosmos. Anybody trying to divide this mission it is his or her foolishness,

Everybody must follow all 16 points. and workers and LFT have 34 points. so
it is my humble appeal to all devotees and workers to do Guru Sakash and
memories our oath and follow points strictly.

    I feel so empty.

My heart is so heavy that I cannot even think what to write.

Just a month ago I visited him in Tiljala. When I expressed my concern about
his health, he smiled and assured me that he would be perfectly all right. I
could not even believe when I heard this news from Buddhya'tma'ndadaji.

From my days in Anandanagar till today he was my teacher, guide and Dada. He
was so close to my family. I have so many memories from days in Anandanagar,
in Midnapore, and in Tiljala. He always shared with us in our good days and
bad days. His moral support always motivated my sister, my parents and me.
Today, he is no longer with us.

Vijayananda dada was a scholar. He devoted all his life in writing,
translating and lecturing. I request to all brothers and sisters that let us
to do something on his memory. I suggest that we setup a trust fund in his
memory to give a scholarship every year to a student for achievement in
    literature.
